Billy Mahonie
Billy Mahonie formed in London near the end of 1997 to play instrumental rock music.
The original line-up consisted of Gavin Baker (guitar), Howard Monk (drums), Hywell Dinsdale (bass and guitar) and Kevin Penney (bass). Their first release was on
the Fierce Panda label, a split-single with Rothko, followed by a release on the Fierce Panda offshoot Livid Meercat. By 1999 they had signed with Too Pure, who
released their debut album ‘The Big Dig’.
Despite good reviews for The Big Dig, they were dropped by Too Pure, only for Southern Records to pick them up, and release the album ‘What Becomes Before’ in 2001.
In 2003, a third album ‘Dust’ was released on Tritone Records, with a new line-up of Gavin, Howard, Duncan Brown (bass) and Tony Barrett (guitar).
From 2005 to 2009 the band was Baker and Monk in the studio and the original line up for live shows. Three further albums have followed: ‘Found’ (Oof Records, 2005),
‘Bm By Bm’ (Static Caravan Records, 2009) and ‘Exhale On Mare Street’ (originally released as part of Unlabel's series52 project in 2006 and then remastered and
reissued with bonus tracks on Unlabel in early 2011).
They played a couple of live shows in November 2010. They were very good.
