Also known as Sutcliffe Jügend, Paul Taylor and Kevin Tomkins release work in their own names and as just SJ.
The well-respected duo released a new collection of recordings under their own names entitled 'Between Silences' on Unlabel
in July 2005 and this was followed by 'Threnody For The Victims of Ignorance' as SJ in early 2006.
Kevin Tomkins also contributed an album to Unlabel's series52 project in 2006 under the name Melt (number 11 in the series)
and this was followed in April 2008 by a double album of solo work from Kevin Tomkins entitled 'Square Pegs For Round Holes'.
Taylor and Tomkins began working together as Sutcliffe Jügend in 1981 as a side-project from the main extreme band,
Whitehouse, and instantly gained notoriety as one of the harshest exponents of the original power electronics scene. The
ferocity and sheer brutality of their recordings has seldom been equalled, either in terms of lyrical content or musical
violence.
As Sutcliffe Jügend they released the cassette 'Campaign' and a set of 10 tapes entitled 'We Spit On Their Graves'
both on the Come Organisation, which was bootlegged into a 10 hour vinyl box set, which now changes hands for 3 figure sums.
It was later released on CD but is once again out of print.
They also released the albums 'Pleasure Corpse', 'Sutcliffe Jügend' and 'Death Mask' as well as the video 'Studio
Aktion', and appeared on numerous rare and very hard to find compilations.
Both Kevin Tomkins and Paul Taylor were founder members of the band Bodychoke, who released the albums 'Mindshaft', 'Five
Prostitutes', which was produced by Steve Albini, and 'Cold River Songs' between 1994 and 1998.
Since reforming, Sutcliffe Jügend have also released the 'Live Assault 01' album, the 'This Is The Truth' album, the
'Transgression' 12" and the Japanese Tour EP 'White Goods' with Satori. The albums 'The Fall of Nature' and 'Pigdaddy' were
also released in April 2008.
Other people said this about SJ:
"Sutcliffe Jügend has, since 1981, stood out in the field of extreme power electronics. The sheer violence and
brutality that has marked every single SJ release through the years is unmistakable. Despite the rather small number of
Sutcliffe Jügend releases over the years, the genius behind SJ, Kevin Tomkins, is far from unknown. When Tomkins and
Philip Best (of Consumer Electronics) joined Whitehouse in the early eighties, they helped to create some of the very
hardest music Whitehouse had ever recorded, including the classic LPs 'Right to Kill' and 'Great White Death' - both owe a
lot of their infamy to Kevin Tomkins." (Roger Karmanik, 1998).
